Instructional Lab Technician I – Photography Ventura County Community College District

This recruitment is being conducted to establish an eligibility list that will be used to fill the current and upcoming vacancies up to one year from the date of the oral examination. The immediate vacancy is a 10 month/100% position at Moorpark College.

Under the direction of a Dean, monitor and maintain an instructional photography laboratory and assist students with camera use and digital lab, lighting studio, and darkroom equipment and procedures. Job Duties: Monitor the use of a photography laboratory; assist students with assignments in accordance with faculty directives. E

Assist students with problems and questions related to the purpose and operation of a wide variety of cameras, processing and lighting equipment, and light meters; assist students with film and digital processing, and analog and digital printing processes, including composition, retouching, and mounting techniques. E

Issue materials and equipment to students for use in photography assignments; receive and process equipment, lockers, and materials loaned; maintain records. E

Prepare and mix developers, toners, fixers, and related photographic chemicals according to established safety practices and procedures. E

Store equipment and supplies; maintain storerooms and working areas in an orderly and clean condition. E

Maintain inventory records of supplies and equipment; prepare requisitions; request bids from vendors; receive and process supplies and equipment utilizing a computerized record-keeping system. E

Perform basic maintenance on photographic and computer equipment including minor repair and parts replacement. E

Create and print both black and white and color photographs for demonstration and instruction; create and catalogue instructional materials. E

Train and provide work direction to student assistants.

Assist students with basic computer skills and related software.

Perform related duties as assigned.

E = Essential duties

Minimum Qualifications any combination equivalent to completion of two years college-level course work in photography or a related field and two years of related work experience.

Licenses or other Requirements: N/A Knowledge Of:

  • Basic principles of black and white and color photography
  • Zone System
  • Non-silver photographic processes
  • Commonly used camera and photographic laboratory equipment and associated techniques for routine maintenance
  • Darkroom film and paper processes and practices for black and white photographs
  • Color chemicals and solutions used in a photographic laboratory
  • Digital imaging systems, scanners, printers, computers, and related photography software
  • Principles of basic computer networking and maintenance
  • Data entry, record-keeping, and cataloguing techniques
  • Principles of health and safety applicable in a photographic laboratory

Ability To:

  • Use and explain a wide variety of camera formats, accessories, lights, and related equipment
  • Use and explain equipment used in processing and printing of color and black and white materials
  • Use and explain computer equipment used in processing and printing digital photographs
  • Operate and maintain a variety of photographic equipment including cameras, lighting equipment, and laboratory apparatus
  • Work effectively and cooperatively with students and instructional staff
  • Train and provide work direction to others
  • Observe health and safety regulations
  • Operate a computer and related software

Required Applicant Documents: Documents not to exceed 2mb maximum Resume Required Selection Process: PRELIMINARY SCREENING OF APPLICATIONS & SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE: In completing the application and the supplemental questionnaire, outline in detail your education, training (such as classes, seminars, workshops) and experience. Application materials will be screened by a committee of subject matter experts. Appearance before the oral examination (interview) board will be limited to the candidates with the highest T&E scores.

ELIGIBILITY LIST: upon completion of the examination, the open / promotional eligibility list will be compiled by combining the final examination score with applicable seniority and veteran’s credits, if any. The candidates will be ranked according to their total score on the eligibility list. Certification will be made from the highest three ranks on the eligibility list. This eligibility list will be used to fill current and upcoming vacancies for up to one year from the date of the oral examination.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD: All appointments made from eligibility lists for initial appointment or for promotion shall be probationary for a period of six (6) months or one hundred thirty (130) days of paid service whichever is longer.

Salary Range: $3775.00 – $5205.00 Starting Salary: $3775.00 – $4203.00 – New employees may request salary placement above step one based on directly related experience which exceeds the minimum qualifications for the classification. Advanced salary placement must be requested at the time of offer and is subject to verification of qualifying experience and applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements and/or Personnel Commission Rules. The examination process will consist of the following components:

A) Evaluation of Training and Experience (T&E) = Qualifying (pass/fail)

B) Technical Interview = 100% weighting on final score

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications stated by the filing deadline in order to move forward in the testing process. those candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will have their application materials reviewed during a Training and Experience Evaluation (T&E). a T&E is an assessment of training and experience that has prepared the candidate for the position. those with the highest scores on the T&E will be invited to the technical interview.
