Savvy Tech Gifts for Seniors

There’s always a reason to give a thoughtful gift. if you have a senior or two on your shopping list, how about something a little different this year? Instead of yet another box of fancy soap or aftershave, consider a technology gift for today’s savvy seniors.

A Web Cam Means happy Grandchildren

Give the grandparents the gift of visual and audio interaction with their children and grandchildren. if Grandma and Grandpa don’t live next door, they’ll love the opportunity to see and speak with their grandchildren via a Web cam. most of today’s Web cams have a built-in microphone, and may come optimized to be used with Windows Messenger or some other IM system. with prices (at Amazon) varying from less than $30 to almost $300, there is a cam for every budget.

Remember that, while some seniors may be able and willing to install their cams themselves and discover how to use them on their own, others may require assistance. Include installation and a few lessons as part of the gift in the latter case.

A Web Cam Means Peace of Mind

A wireless network camera could save the day in special circumstances. for example, Panasonic’s BL-C131A Network Camera Wireless 802.11 is promoted as a camera that lets you monitor your pets, your property, or even your children when you are not at home.

You set up the camera at any location, without needing a local PC. Then, by logging on to a specially designated Internet site, you can check the room from any PC or Internet-equipped cell phone or PDA. You can also modify the camera’s pointing direction and its digital zoom via the Web browser. the camera has a built-in microphone, as well as a special night-view mode.

Consider this camera’s application in the case of a senior who lives alone and may be in frail health. if you have ever frantically phoned Granddad’s neighbors to please check on him to be sure he’s OK, you’ll appreciate the peace of mind this product could provide. with Granddad’s permission, you could set up the camera in his home and log on whenever you were concerned that he could need help-say, a time when he was not responsive to phone or e-mail messages.

At close to $300, this wireless camera is among the more powerful products of its kind available.

Rather than a Web cam, you might also consider the QuietCare system , a health-care system designed to help seniors live independently. this system uses a series of activity sensors to learn Granddad’s normal activity around his home. when the system notes a change in pattern, it notifies a call center or sends an e-mail alert or text message to a designated party.

Computer Glasses Aren’t a Pain in the Neck

Does the computer-savvy senior in your life wear bifocals, trifocals, or progressive-lens eyeglasses? These glasses are not optimized for viewing a computer monitor. when wearing such glasses at the computer, Grandma has to tilt her head backward so she can focus on the screen when she is looking through the bottom part of the lens. to put it mildly, this gives her a big pain in the neck.

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way. Grandma will enjoy her computer time so much more if you spring for a set of prescription computer glasses. Contact your friendly optometrist and ask for details. be sure to ask your eye-care specialist about glare-resistant lenses, also very important for computer users.

Keep Grandpa in the Loop with a DVD Player and Slide Show

Want something really special for the senior in the family who is shut in, or perhaps living in a continuing care facility? how about a small, portable DVD player and a special family slide show disc? Contact the extended family members and ask for digital pictures-both old and new. Compile your collection; turn it into a slide show using PowerPoint, Microsoft Plus SuperPack for Windows XP or some other slide show software; and then burn it to a DVD. (If using PowerPoint, you’ll need to include the free PowerPoint viewer on the DVD disc).

Remember to add titles and captions to each picture so Grandpa knows what he’s looking at. You might also shoot some video, edit it, and send along a video production that your senior can watch in the privacy of his or her own room.

Portable DVD players range in price from $30 to a couple of hundred dollars. You must be sure that the machine you choose can play DVD+R/RW. Otherwise, there will be only disappointment when your home-recorded DVDs won’t play.

You could also include a few of Grandma or Grandpa’s favorite movies with this gift. And, like the Web cam described above, your senior might appreciate some instructions on how to use this gift

VoIP Means Affordable Long-Distance Calling-Anywhere

Are the family members spread over the four corners of the globe? if so, VoIP providers such as Skype, Vonage and others make it possible for seniors to stay in contact without worrying about astronomical telephone bills.

Give your senior a microphone with headset (starting at around $20), or perhaps a special Skype phone. Make sure that Grandma has help with the Skype software installation, which can be tricky. provided all parties have a Skype account, Grandma can talk with anyone, regardless of where they live, free of charge, using the microphone or the Skype phone. if she plans to phone someone who will be using a landline phone, buy her a Skype credit or two costing about $14 each. Rates per minute vary depending on location. for example, a Skype call made from Canada to a landline in Israel cost about $8 for thirty minutes.

An iPod Means Music, Audiobooks and Newscasts-Anywhere

Consider giving Grandpa the gift of portable music and newscasts. with an iPod or other similar device, your senior doesn’t have to miss their favorite newscast or other show while they walk around the neighborhood.

Audiobooks are particularly appreciated if your senior has difficulty reading due to failing eyesight. You might consider adding a gift certificate from iTunes or from a service like Audible.com, for example, along with the media player. At Audible.com, you pay $7.49 for the first three months, then $14.95 afterward. your senior gets one downloaded audio book per month, chosen from the searchable database of around 40,000 titles.

iTunes similarly has many choices, including movies, television shows, music, audiobooks and podcasts. be sure to introduce your senior to the world of podcasting, if he isn’t familiar with it.

Other miscellaneous ideas include a TiVo (seniors get weary of commercials, same as you do), or perhaps an AirO2bic computer mouse , a device designed to be used by arthritic hands.

If you are looking for the best deal possible on mobile computing then you should consider looking at some cheap refurbished laptops. You can find these in a couple of different places and we will take a look at some here.

First you should check out the local electronics superstores that carry all of the big brands. There they might have open box items, refurbished machines, and customer returned merchandise that might be offered at a good discount. one of the best options is to shop around at these stores and keep an eye on them until you find a deal that is worth jumping on. Depending on how nice of a laptop you are looking for, your goal should be to spend less than 500 dollars, but if you are really budget minded then you can even limit yourself to 300 dollars or less. The way to do this is to find a cheap or refurbished netbook computer.

Netbooks are a fairly new line of laptops that are smaller and more portable than traditional laptops. They are also usually quite a bit cheaper, so if you are looking for an awesome deal then you stand to find it most easily with a netbook. it is important that you test out your typing and the screen size on a netbook before you purchase it, though, because they can be quite small and you want to be sure that you can get real work done on the machine. if you can then this will undoubtedly be your cheapest option and all you need to do is be patient and wait for the perfect deal on one.

Your next best bet is to check out the refurbished section on major manufacturers websites and look for deals. Remember that they have deals as well and sometimes they have sales on their refurbished inventories too so it pays to be patient.

How to Replace A Window?

Well you can as mentioned earlier go with the do it yourself method. this is an option with the advantage of saving you a substantial amount of money. But then there is the opportunity cost that also has to be factored in. you can expect to take about roughly four to six hours to install a window of average size on the ground floor (note time increases exponentially if it’s not being installed on the first floor). Money spent on this project can be estimated to be between $500.00 to $600.00. if you are for instance putting in a high performance 36 by 54 inch wood insert replacement window. The project may not be rocket science but it’s no child’s play either: it requires at least an average amount of carpentry expertise and remodeling homes experience, the installation process is made relatively easier if the window being installed is on the ground making it easily accessible from the outside of the house.

But there is the issue that if you go on about this tasks yourself without the assistance of a professional contractor you will end up with an average looking job. though it may seem like you would have saved money, in true essence in the long run it is not really worth it. There is too much unnecessary stress arising from frustration which is noted by most who take the do it yourself route. The is also time consumed doing this task, especially if the window is not on the ground floor and back and forth movement due to the window not being the right size; which is one of the many problems noted by reviewers who have tried this before and the is the risk of applying to much expanding form which will move the frame in the long run.

The Best way to Replace A Window

With the above in mind I would recommend that you hire the services of a contractor. A contracting company that has received good ratings and reviews, that knows very well how to replace a window. The amount you save in the long run dwarfs that you will spend doing the job yourself. There is also the feeling you will get when you see the perfectly installed window. priceless.

I hope you will seek the assistance of a professional contracting company on how to replace a window. you can read more on the additional information section of this publication on what you need to know when looking for a contracting company that is reliable.

• you can use the do it yourself method when you want to replace a window though it is not recommended.

• you can expect your do it yourself project to take roughly four to six hours and cost roughly $500.00 to $600.00.

• though you may save money doing it yourself the cost in the long run is not worth it.

• employ the services of a contractor to save you time, money and a lot of stress.

Additional Information

When looking for contracting companies make sure that you use word of mouth as your basis of search. ask around friends, family and people in your immediate circle for references on people who conducted the job for them. Best Cheap Gaming Computers

May 1, 2012 by
Filed under Every thing you Need to Know

Well, I finally got tired of it. I have been playing WarRock – a free, first person war game – with my brother. My gaming computer wasn’t really slow, but it just wasn’t fast enough. it always seemed like I was half a second behind, and the graphics weren’t as good as I had seem on my brother’s PC. So I went looking for the best cheap gaming computers, and this is what I found.

My budget was about $1,000. I knew that $1,000 wasn’t going to buy the best gaming computer in the world, but it would get me off to a real good start. I wanted a computer that was not maxed out because I wanted to be able to enhance it if I needed. since I didn’t want to spend much more than $1,000, I started by looking at this IBuyPower Gamer Extreme 940i Desktop computer.

In my opinion, this is one of the best cheap gaming computers. it has a 2.8 GHz processor, and 4GB of dual channel memory. its hard drive is huge at 750GB, and it also comes with a 24x DVD-RW drive. its graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTS250 1GB graphics card. it is not a top of the line card, but it is certainly more than acceptable. You will also get the Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium edition.

Another great benefit of this PC is that it comes with plenty of space. it has 10 USB ports, and 4 unused 5.25 bays for adding just about anything you want. it is also a very easy PC to setup – it is basically ready right out of the box. this Gamer Extreme 940i is very easy to work on, so if you are a gaming junkie like me, you will like that a lot.

The second product I looked at in my search for the best cheap gaming computers was this iBuyPower Extreme 542D3 Desktop Gaming Computer. it has a 3.2 GHz Athlon AMD processor, so it has a lot more giddy-up-and-go than my 2.1 GHz CPU. it has 4 GB of dual channel memory, and a 500 GB hard drive. now its graphics card is a 1GB ATI Radeon graphics card, and it comes with Microsoft Windows 7 Home edition.

Another one of the best cheap gaming computers is the iBuyPower 901TO. the 2.3 GHz processor is slightly slower than the one above, but not enough that you are going to notice. its hard drive is much smaller at 320 GB (as opposed to the 500 GB), but it does have the 4 GB hard drive.

The graphics card is the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500. the problem is that you are really going to need a dedicated graphics card for good gaming, so you will probably end up buying another graphics card. but the Intel Media Accelerator will get you started – just depends on how good you want your graphics to be.

You do get some pretty decent speakers with this gaming computer. I can’t find the specs on the manufacturer’s page, but they have to better than the other ones come with – which is none. this IBuyPower 901TO is about as low as you want to go on the price. You get much lower than this, and you just aren’t really getting one of the best cheap gaming computers.

Used Laptop Auctions – 5 Ways to Score a Deal

March 15, 2012 by
Filed under Every thing you Need to Know

You’ve decided to get a used laptop, and are looking for a way to get the best deal. you may have considered buying through an online auction site such as eBay. This can be a great idea, as you’ll have a very broad selection to choose from.

So, how do you make sure that you’re getting the best deal possible on your used laptop? Check out these five tips that will help you find the perfect laptop for you at a price you’ll love.

1. know what you Need

Since there are all manner of different laptops brand, styles, and configurations available on the used market, you’ll need to narrow down what you’re looking for. If you’re looking to travel with your laptop, look for a lightweight model. If you’re a gamer, get a gaming laptop. by purchasing exactly what you need, you’ll make sure that you don’t overspend on features you don’t need.

2. know Your Budget

Closely related to this is knowing your budget. If you’ve got an upper limit on what you can spend, stick with it. It’s just that simple. Letting yourself overspend is never a good thing, so just say no.

3. Be Willing to Buy Upgrades

If you’re tech savvy, or know someone who is, you might be able to save money buy purchasing upgrades to get an old laptop up to date. For example, if you find a great laptop that doesn’t have wi-fi, you could just buy a wi-fi card and get what you need. Of course, be sure to take into account the cost added from the upgrades. If you keep this option open, though, you just might be able to score a great deal.

This is more a matter of not wasting money rather than saving it, but it’s critical that you understand this before buying. The batteries that laptops use have a limited lifespan. after many charges and discharges, the battery gradually looses its ability to hold a charge. This is a common problem with used laptops, and one you need to be on the lookout for. Be sure to ask the seller how long the battery stays charged. If the battery isn’t working properly, be sure to factor in the cost of a new one into your calculations.

5. know Your Pricing

This is important. you need to know how much your laptop of choice sells for, so you can get the great deal. To do this, search for the laptop you’re looking for, and select the show completed listings. This will get you an idea of what past laptops have sold for. you can use this to get an average reference price. Use this price to help spot yourself a great deal.

So, I hope this gives you some idea how you can save on a used laptop by buying through an auction. It’s not a guaranteed system, but if you keep up on the listings, you’ll certainly be able to find yourself a great deal.
