Lynn wins 8th as Cards beat reeling Braves 8-2

ATLANTA (AP) — Mike Matheny saw a different edge in Lance Lynn as he approached his second start this year against the Atlanta Braves , the only team to beat him this season.

“He had fire in his eyes today,” Matheny said.

Lynn joined Philadelphia’s Cole Hamels as the major leagues’ first eight-game winners, and the St. Louis Cardinals’ extended the Braves’ longest losing streak in two years to eight games with an 8-2 victory Monday.

Matheny said Lynn threw “probably his best game.” he said Lynn, who was making his 10th start of the season and 12th of his career, isn’t sneaking up on any teams.

“You figure at this point they’ve seen quite a bit of him and he’s not a secret in the league anymore,” Matheny said. “For him to go out on this start and make it his best one says a lot about him, to get a chance against the team that got him before.”

Lynn (8-1) allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings, striking out eight. while Lynn was dominating the Braves, Hamels pitched the Phillies to an 8-4 win at the Mets.

Lynn lost to the Braves 7-4 on may 13 in St. Louis.

“They played a great game against me that game in St. Louis and there was a little added incentive to be sure,” Lynn said.

Atlanta is on its worst skid since the Braves lost nine in a row from April 21-29, 2010. The Braves have fallen from first place to a last-place tie with the Phillies in the NL East at 26-24.

“We’ve got to turn this thing around – soon,” Braves catcher Brian McCann said. “We’ve just got to stay afloat. we hit a bump in the road. we have to bear down.”

Atlanta has given up seven runs or more in four straight games for the first time since five in a row from July 26-30, 2008, according to STATS LLC.

“We’ve always been known for our pitching, and we will,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “We’re just going through a stretch right now.”

Daniel Descalso hit a two-run homer as a fill-in starter at third base for David Freese , who was given a day off with a mild sprain of his right hand.

Rafael Furcal had three hits, including a homer, and Matt Adams had three hits with three RBIs for St. Louis.

Marc Rzepczynski and Eduardo Sanchez followed Lynn with hitless relief, completing a five-hitter.

Atlanta’s Tommy Hanson (5-4) gave up a season-high six runs on eight hits in 3 1-3 innings.

“I don’t think anybody’s panicking right now. We’re still above .500 right now,” said Hanson, who had given up no more than two runs in his previous four starts.

Hanson left the bases loaded in the first and stranded a runner on third base in the second, then fell behind 4-0 in the third.

Matt Holliday singled and scored on McCann’s passed ball. after Carlos Beltran was caught in a rundown between third and home when he broke for the plate on a pitch, Yadier Molina singled in a run and Descalso followed with his second home run this season.

Furcal’s home run off Hanson and Adams’ RBI single off Kris Medlen made it 6-0 in the fourth.

Juan Francisco had a two-run single in the bottom half. Adams added a two-run double against Medlen in the sixth.

Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman didn’t start for the third straight day due to vision problems.

Freeman said he can’t wear contacts because his tear ducts aren’t producing. he can’t wear normal glasses when playing because he can’t see when hitting from his closed stance. he said he hopes prescription sports goggles will arrive Tuesday.

Atlanta arranged a Memorial Day surprise for the family of Air Force Sgt. David Sims in the middle of the fifth inning.

Sims’ wife, Robin, and four children were on the field to see his message to the family shown on the Braves video board. Sims, who has been serving in Afghanistan, emerged on the field after the video and was quickly engulfed by a group hug from his children, followed by a long embrace from his wife, as the crowd of 42,426 cheered.

NOTES: Matheny said Freese could play but added he wanted to “nip it in the bud” so Freese’s hand will heal. … Molina started after leaving Sunday’s game early due to dehydration. … Matheny said Cardinals INF-OF Allen Craig (left hamstring strain) is expected to be ready to come off the DL on Friday. … McCann (illness) was 0-for-4 in his first start since may 21. … Cardinals RHP Jake Westbrook will face RHP Randall Delgado on Tuesday night.

How To Choose A Gaming Computer 2011

Choosing A Gaming Computer

You’re about to spend a lot of money, and the thought of it probably makes you feel nauseous. you want to own a spankin’ new gaming computer, but the idea surrounds you in clouds of options and alternatives. Making a purchase of a gaming computer is a daunting task. this is one task that you need to take careful thought to in order to get the most bang for your buck. this decision is also one that you will need to consider a whole host of options for as different options create different performance results. If done right, if will provide you with an excellent PC that will play all of your games just the way you want to see them look.

This guide is going to help you look for a gaming computer that will give you great gameplay and performance. It will also give you an idea of what exactly to look for when it comes to the parts and components. Finally, you will get to know some of the great gaming computer manufacturers so to head you in the right direction when it comes to your purchase without getting ripped off.

The following are the most important computer parts you will need to take into consideration

Video Card

CPU (processor)
Power Supply
RAM (memory)
The Video Card

A video card is the part of the computer that processes your game’s 3D graphics and is the most important part of your game’s performance. Getting a good video card is absolutely essential for a good gaming computer. Without this, your gaming computer is only a regular computer. The best advice for your gaming computer is to not skimp on the video card.

In choosing a video card there are two computers which hold on to the entire market – Nvidia and ATI (owned by AMD). Nvidia’s consumer end brand is the Nvidia GeForce. ATI commands the Radeon HD line of video cards. although, these two companies offer great options for gaming, there are few differences in performance when you buy a gaming level model (we’ll get to good models soon). In my personal opinion Nvidia cards have an edge because they come with a technology called PhsyX that adds more realistic effects to many games which are optimized for it. some PhsyX effects include life-like clothing and flags, exploding particles and more. PhsyX will only work with games that use PhsyX and only work on a video card build for it from Nvidia.

Now to the models. when searching for a model you need to look at the model numbers. The first number is the model line and the numbers after give you the exact model. for instance, Nvidia’s 400 series includes the model 450, 460, 470 and 480. Generally, the higher the exact model number, the better the performance you will see from it.

What model to get? we recommend Nvidia so we’ll give you the best of their cards

GTX 460 or better (GTX 460, GTX 460 2Win, GTX 470, GTX 480)
GTX 550Ti or better (GTX 550Ti, GTX 560Ti, GTX 570, GTX 580, GTX 590)

The CPU isn’t quite as important to gaming as the video card but it is still one of the most important as the speed of your computer is based on the CPU. currently there are two companies which dominate the market – Intel and AMD. we recommend AMD as they offer the best bang for your buck. also, Intel isn’t favored by most gamers because you pay extra to get a technology called hyper-threading which isn’t used in PC games.

The latest trend in the CPU is multi cores. These are important and you should try and get the most cores possible since more cores generally mean better speed and performance. we highly suggest that you get AT LEAST 4 cores (quad core) since many games are optimized for quad core cpu’s.

AMD offers two main model lines for CPU’s – Athlon II and Phenom II. The Phenom II is preferred for gaming and tend to have better performance than the Athlon II. furthermore, the Phenom II Black Edition models are even better.

Random Access Memory has nothing to do with how much space you can have on your computer, but that isn’t important. what is important is that there are different types of memory. The latest type of RAM is DDR3. Every new computer (gaming or not) should include DDR3.

The most important thing about memory is amount and NOT speed. There is nearly no performance change between 1333MHz and 2000MHz, but there is a HUGE difference between 2GB and 4GB. we recommend to have 4GB and 8GB if you want to ‘future-proof’.

Another aspect to RAM is Cas Latency. this is not as important as the amount of RAM, but it does matter more than speed. we recommend a Latency of 9 or LOWER.

The Power Supply
This is a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE, HUGE mistake people make. Power Supplies are the things that take the power from the plug in the wall to all the components in your computer. Power Supplies don’t really matter much in your gaming performance; however, they are extremely important.

Power Supplies are measured in wattage where higher amounts provide more power. It is absolutely vital to get a high powered power supply. we recommend a 550 to 700 watt power supply for a gaming computer with a the video cards we listed above. for the GTX 480, GTX 580, and GTX 590 a 650 watt or greater power supply is needed.

Now to the mistakes people make.

Weak Power supplies – A power supply that is too weak and doesn’t provide enough power can destroy or permanently damage vital components by having them operate without enough power.

Cheap Brands – The price range for a 550 watt power supply can range from $20 to $100. sure the $20 supply sounds like a convincing deal as it offers 550 watts, but these power supplies break down easily and VERY often only last 8 or 9 months. It they die while the computer is on or slowly lose efficiency, they can damage components. The best brands out there are Corsair and Ultra. we recommend paying the extra 20 or 30 bucks them. you computer will thank you.

Best Prices
Shop around.longer than you should. you can find an excellent PC but you really must be patient. Don’t make a bad purchase because you didn’t want to wait.

Where to Avoid
Ebay- although there are plenty of great sellers on ebay, there are also plenty of bad sellers. If you really want to purchase from eBay, make sure the seller is reputable and read all the negative feedback.

Dell- The computer company may sell plenty of great consumer computers, but they simply don’t have a strong performance computer or product line for gamers.

Alienware- now owned by Dell, Alienware is a WAY overpriced extension of Dell computers.

iBuyPower and CyberPowerPC- both companies have terrible technical support reviews and ratings. Beware They may produce great gaming PC’s at good prices, but I’ve heard first hand accounts of people getting broken gaming computers which they had to send back and didn’t see their computer for another 3 or 4 months.

Best Manufacturers

Falcon Northwest – although their prices are rather high, they offer excellent support and high end performance

AGC Gaming – by far the best prices on desktop gaming computers, plenty of customizing options, and above average service and support.

Pro Star PC – Excellent gaming laptops and tons of models and sizes to choose from. Plus they offer top notch technical support.

Five cool uses for a USB flash drive

Your trusty USB flash drive is much more versatile than you might realize, packing capabilities that go well beyond storing and transferring files.

These little-known tricks can be utilized by computer newbies and technogeeks alike to achieve anything from restoring a virus-ridden computer to launching and playing portable apps right from the drive.

(Credit:Ed Rhee/CNET)

Unlock our top-10 ways to use a USB flash drive with the guide below. Thanks to fellow How To blogger Ed Rhee, and the team at CNET, you’ll be surprised to find that storing files might not be the best use of thumbdrives after all.

1. Lock and unlock your computer, secret agent styleWith Predator, you can turn your USB drive into a “key” that unlocks your computer when plugged in, and locks it when it’s removed. if anyone attempts to access your computer without the key (or top-secret password), they’ll be hit with an epic “ACCESS DENIED” message.

2. Revive a virus-ridden systemWith the free AVG rescue software loaded on your USB drive, you can scan a crippled computer for viruses. And, if all goes well, bring your system back to life.

3. Run portable apps, games, and utilitiesWhat’s more portable than a laptop, tablet, or smartphone? Answer: a USB flash drive. Run applications likeFirefox, Chrome, OpenOffice, and more, with just your USB flash drive and any computer.

4. Install and test-drive Windows 8Want to peek into Microsoft’s upcoming operating system? The consumer preview is available, but with this tutorial, we’ll show you how to try out Windows 8 without overwriting your current OS.

5. Give Linux a tryYou might have heard your geek friends brag about Linux, the open-source operating system. like the Windows 8 tutorial, we’ll show you how to use your USB drive to boot Linux and poke around the OS without overwriting your current system.

6. Secure your docs and filesIf all you want to do is use your thumbdrive for file storage, don’t forget to encrypt it. by doing so, only you will have access to the files on the drive, rendering it useless to anyone who finds (or steals) it.

7. Maintain your Windows computerFind out how to install Parted Magic, a handy piece of software that lets you do things like reset Windows passwords, clone your system, and partition your hard disk, right from your USB flash drive.

8. Install Windows 7 on a MacBookIf you want access to both operating systems, OS X and Windows, you can use a USB drive to install Windows on your MacBook. this is extra handy for MacBook Air owners who need a workaround for the absence of an optical drive.

9. Turn it into a last-minute giftVictims of procrastination will love this guide, which shows you how a plain ol’ USB drive can be repurposed into a thoughtful gift in just a couple hours time.

10. Too many USB drives? Donate them!Marketers seem to love USB drives, handing them out in any opportunity they encounter. We tech writers especially are often inundated with the darned things at conventions likeCES. if you’re in the same boat, see if there’s a school in your area that could use them.

Some computers are designed for work, while others are designed for other purposes. In the case of the HP Pavilion dv6-3150us, the purpose of this design is flat-out fun. a laptop built for entertainment and good times all around, this HP Pavilion model is the ideal laptop for doing what you love whenever you want to do it.

The dv6-3150us starts with a 2.53GHz Intel Core i5-460M processor with Turbo Boost Technology. 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 640GB SATA hard drive complete the engine of the unit, giving it plenty of power and memory to deal with the most demanding of applications, programs and games.

Few laptops are as ready to use out of the box as this one is. the HP Pavilion dv6-3150us is a vigorous unit that comes loaded with plenty of features and specifications, as mentioned, but it’s a lot more than that. thanks to the 15.6-inch diagonal HD display and the Intel HD graphics with 1696MB of total graphics memory, this HP Pavilion delivers crisp, clean visuals for whatever programs and videos you’re interested in.

For some, the value of a computer offering so much by way of entertainment features cannot be understated. In the case of this Pavilion, the value is unbelievable. Retailing at most outlets for around $700, this unit compares and exceeds the rest in terms of overall value and in terms of specific categories.

As I’ve mentioned, the processor is a powerful one and deserves mention. the visual aspect of the HP Pavilion can’t be discussed enough and the ability to pick up and play this laptop is something truly remarkable.

In terms of battery life, this round of the HP Pavilion is really something. the battery offers 5.5 hours of life, something that really has no comparison among similarly priced laptops on the market today. Depending on your user settings, you can really get a lot of bang for your buck with this Pavilion.

Isn’t it Possible?

The Arkansas Razorbacks came into this season with a new Athletic Director, a new Head Coach, a new coaching staff, and a team made up primarily of either underclassman, with little on-field experience, or straight up freshman, that were playing football on Friday nights just last fall.

Along with the new coach (who is commonly touted as an offensive genius), came the new coach’s playbook, which is reportedly voluminous and complicated. So, in addition to having a very green team, the few upperclassmen we held onto had to learn a completely new offensive strategy from a coaching staff that is very different from years past.

Throw in our schedule, which is the toughest we have seen in years, and it is understandable why the general consensus was that the Razorbacks would be lucky to win even half of our games in this season of rebuilding. after the first few games, most folks residing outside the 501/870/479 area codes were pretty sure we wouldn’t see another win all year.

So it was no surprise to me last weekend, after beating #20 ranked Auburn, that all ESPN had to say was how bad is Auburn? even the Razorbacks could beat them it was no surprise, but it was still disappointing, because no one is seeing the big picture coming out of Fayetteville, Arkansas. Honestly, unless you have seen every game, you will probably write me off as another one of those delusional drink the Kool-Aid Razorback optimists. But I am here to tell you, if you have watched every game, we wouldn’t seem nearly as delusional as everyone likes to believe.

First of all, yes, we were optimistic coming in to this season; primarily because of the much needed change in the coaching staff, as well as a few of the freshmen that they were able to pull into the fold right before signing day. even in the midst of a last minute and volatile coaching change, we were able to not only keep ALL of our commitments to the former coaching staff, but were able to pick up Tyler Wilson (4 star QB), who was committed to Tulsa; and Joe Adams (4 star ATH), who was committed to USC. both players have seen successful field time this year already.

In addition to those two players, we also had Ryan Mallett, Michigan’s 5-star QB out of Texarkana last year, transfer to Arkansas. he is red shirting this year (because of the transfer), but we sure are excited to have him for next year. We also had D’Anthony Curtis, Matt Hall (6’9 300lb OT), Jarius Wright, and Jericho Nelson; four 4-star freshmen coming in. The raw talent we have on our team right now is amazing. But they are young, and that was supposed to eclipse any prospect of having a competitive team in the 2008-2009 season. sorry that us wee little piggies didn’t buy into that.

We started our year out with two non conference games that should have been absolute blowouts. Western Illinois and Louisiana-Monroe proved to be a little tougher than even the team had planned on, and we ended up squeaking by each team in the 4th quarter.

If you saw the games (and I did), you would have seen that our boys never got wide eyed. even facing double digit deficits at points in both games. You would have also seen that we had some really complicated plays that we pulled off with ease. our offense looked incredible for much of both of these games, although at times it was inconsistent and there were some very obvious freshmen errors, which were to be expected. our defense was anemic at best. With two seniors suspended, the senior leadership was indeed lacking and it was very apparent. in the first game, we were also missing our junior running back, Michael Smith (keep an eye out for this little dynamo that has been living in the shadow of McFadden and Jones for two years).

Our third week, against long time rival Texas, got postponed due to Hurricane Ike. As soon as we got the news, Petrino and his staff had the Bama plans printed and distributed to all the players. it has been widely reported that they switched game plans with an hour’s notice. THAT was impressive.

Unfortunately, having the extra time to prepare for Bama didn’t really help us much. they slaughtered every direction. That was a letdown because usually the Arkansas-Alabama game is a toughy for both teams; coming from the same conference, there is a lot of natural rivalry present. this was the game that we all started realizing just how much work still needed to be done.

Turning around the following week and playing the Texas make-up game, we didn’t fare much better. they pretty much ran all over us as well. I didn’t see this game (maybe thankfully) because I reside in North Carolina where ABC chose to air the Seminole game instead, but I did get to listen to it via RazorVision. it was dismal. The amazing part about this was how the players and coaches seemed as perplexed as the fans.they knew how they practiced during the week, but something just wasn’t jiving when they took the field. at this point, from the interviews with the players, you could tell they were starting to get a little miffed.

The next game in our brutal series was against Florida. they had just been taken down by Ole miss the week before and we knew that Tebow and the gatorboys were going to roll into Fayetteville with a chip on their shoulder. We didn’t expect to win this game, especially after Bama and Texas steamrolled us, but what we saw during the game was certainly uplifting.

The final score really wasn’t indicative of the game that was played. We were solidly in that game all the way through the 3rd quarter, at which point we imploded as a team and got blown out. however, overall, I was very pleased with our performance in this game.

Our O was dynamic, and our D did a great job of holding Tebow. We forced Timmy to throw his first interception in over 200 pass attempts. in the 3rd quarter, we were down by 10, we actually had a shot, things were going great, then it all fell apart in the 4th resulting in a final score of 38-7. I can tell you, we were certainly the happiest fans that ever got beat by 31 points. That is because we had been watching, and we knew it was a turning point.

Going into Auburn, even prior to Tuberville firing his offensive coordinator, we were feeling pretty good. Not wanting to get our hopes too high, we knew that we actually had a shot of pulling out a win, if we could just keep it together through the last quarter. We knew Auburn’s offense was nowhere near as good as ours (mainly due to the fact that they can’t decide on a QB and stick with it), but we knew their defense was definitely one of the best, ranked in the top 5 in the entire nation.and we weren’t quite sure, as dynamic as our offense has proven to be, if we could take the physicality of their D. But we did. We did everything we were supposed to do.we played the entire game, even the 4th quarter. both offense and defense stepped up and played VERY well.resulting in a 25-22 much needed victory for the Razorbacks.

Now, to anyone that hasn’t watched Arkansas or Auburn play this year, the rational excuse here was that Auburn was in disarray over the abrupt dismissal of their O-coach, so of course Arkansas could take them. For those of us that have watched the Razorbacks AND the Tigers this year against varying opponents, Auburn did not play poorly compared to other games they have played this year. Their offense looked like it was getting tired in the third quarter, but they rallied back in the fourth. Tuberville, a master of the clock, made sure his Tigers had every opportunity for a come back up until the last seconds of the game.

Getting down to the last minute of the game, we were faced with punting the ball from our own end zone. Petrino knew that with our less than confident special teams unit, and a successfully blocked extra point by Auburn earlier in the game, that this was a risk we should not take. he decided it was a better bet to send senior punter, Jeremy Davis, out of bounds behind the end zone, giving Auburn a 2 point safety (putting them within a field goal of tying the game), than to risk a repeat performance of the earlier play. it was a wager that paid off. With less than a minute left on the clock, Auburn’s offense started moving down field on us relatively quickly, until Matt Harris intercepted a pass with 29 seconds left on the clock, securing our 25-22 victory.

We showed up, we played hard, we pulled some great new plays out of our bag, and executed them stunningly. We won the old fashioned way; we outplayed them. even after the game, Tommy Tuberville commented that Arkansas was a better team than Vandy, no question. and yet ESPN made not one mention of the vast improvement seen in Arkansas, to them we won for no other reason than Auburn sucked.

So, here are my questions.isn’t it at least possible that Arkansas has a MUCH better team than anyone (besides us fans) realizes?

Does it not prove anything that the two teams that ran over us are ranked first and second place in the nation? and that those same two teams actually have an awesome chance of being the contenders in the National Championship this year?

Does it not prove anything that Florida, who looked down right sleepy against us, but looked rather bouncy against LSU, is ranked fifth in the nation and we were actually able to run with these boys for 3 quarters? Does it not prove anything that Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow both said that they played their best against us and Urban was quoted as saying that Arkansas has a very good offensive strategy?

Is it possible that the Razorbacks have turned a corner and while they still have a ways to go, could actually secure a bowl game this season??

Finally, is it possible that Arkansas can win the rest of its games?

In my opinion, yes. if you look at the remaining schedule, we still play a lot of well respected teams, such as Tulsa, who is still undefeated (albeit against a very weak schedule), Ole miss (who is likely a much better team than anyone realizes as well), Kentucky, South Carolina, Mississippi State, and good ole LSWho. however, if we have really hit our stride, all of these games could well turn out in our favor.

At the beginning of the season, I optimistically called for us to get 8-9 wins. That is certainly not out of the realm of possibility. I believe that we can win most of our remaining games. Furthermore, I do not believe that LSU will be the ones to beat us. I truly believe we have the better team and with it being our last game of the season, our freshmen will have an entire season of experience securely behind them.

I do think that we may lose one or two more games (just due to our stunning shade of green), but I think it will be to less suspect teams like Mississippi State or Kentucky. But again, there is the possibility that we will pull the rest of them out. I just have to wonder at what point we will start feeling some love from ESPN .probably least not until we get a National Championship under our belts.which by the looks of things, may happen sooner than anyone thought possible.

One thing I know for sure, next year, we won’t lose nearly as many key players as we did this year. our QB is a senior and will be replaced with 5 star Mallett (6’7) who has almost a year of experience as a QB on a successful Division 1-A team. We already have a 5 star and several 4 star commits for next year and we will have a whole stable full of sophomores that have seen plenty of field action against some of the toughest teams in the country.

Our former coach, Houston Nutt had been long chastised for not being able to put a fence around the state of Arkansas and sign our in-state talent (like Kodi Burns at Auburn). Bobby Petrino will have no such problem, having already shown his skills in bringing in four and five star players from other states.many other states, not just the ones that border us.

And still, ESPN will continue to show their bias and give us no kudos. and because of that, our opponents won’t be expecting much from us. and that might not be a bad thing.

The Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson called in to “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” after the blockbuster filmed earned nearly $165 million in just four days to talk about filming “Catching Fire.”

What’s the First thing To say To Gale In the Next Movie?“It’s weird because Gale and I really don’t have interaction with one another. It’s like an unspoken tension between the two of them. there is some confusion, because what’s happened is Peeta has confessed his real love for Katniss, and Katniss has played along with it, and Peeta finds out that she’s just doing it just for show, and that’s hurtful to one. It’s very heartbreaking!”

When Do you start Filming “Catching Fire?”“We do not know yet. they just started writing the script recently. they hired Simon Beaufoy who wrote “Slumdog Millionnaire” to do the first draft. so that’s going to be great. Gary Ross is an extremely talented director and writer so I think he’s going to get in there with Simon and work on the script with him. they have a release date of November of next year. so we’re working towards that date. We’re probably going to start shooting sometime end of summer or beginning of fall this year.”
