Want to know how to use internet with a notebook computer? First check whether your notebook is enabled with wireless internet card. if your note book is embedded with wireless internet capabilities, then follow the steps. if the OS you use is Windows (maybe XP, Vista or 7) click start and go to control panel and click network settings, then your PC will give a list of network cards built in your PC. Check whether they are enabled or disabled. if disabled then enable the network cards and reboot OS to enable the hardware to work. This is the first step in how to use wireless internet on your notebook computer.

The second step in using wireless internet on your notebook computer is as follows: if they are enabled then install wireless network adapters such as D-Link, Belkin and Netgear etc. USB adapters instantly add the wireless networking capabilities to laptop computers. Just plug in the USB adapter, or the PCMCIA slot, to your notebook, many providers make the devices enabled with auto run ability so that the installation of network adapters would be easy to the user on the go. Using a USB adapter is typically easier to install than opening up the laptop casing and installing a wireless card. it would be a very easy to install the drivers of the hardware (i.e., the network card). This is the second step about how to use internet in your note book computer.

The third step in the topic of how to use internet on notebook computers is as follows: after installing the drivers of the hardware. As per the requirement of the provider of the adapter reboot the OS. But it is recommended to reboot whether the provider suggests this not. then activate the wireless capabilities in your laptop and go to start and click control panel and navigate through the network control panel. Click on the wireless tab, and then click connect. Save the settings of the network settings so as to get started even you reboot your system. by saving the network settings your laptop establishes an internet connection with the whole process explained above. This is the third step about how to use internet on a note book computer.

The fourth step about how to achieve internet access on a wireless notebook computer is as follows: one must secure the network. In doing this the control panel of the router must be accessed and a security key must be entered. Depending on the router, and the type of security used, any device accessing the network will need to use the key to gain access. certain security protocols such as WEP use the key that you enter and generate 4 other keys that can be used to gain access, other security protocols such as WPA simply use the key that the user generated to access the network. Regardless of which way is used, the main point is to secure the network. different providers will have different operations to perform to get connected with internet. Some provide software which will install automatically when you connect the hardware to your note book and have the capability to show how long you are online, how many bytes has been exchanged etc.

How to Choose a Touchscreen Laptop Computer

Touchscreen laptop computers are slowly making their way into the mainstream computing world. Chances are that you’ve owned one or more computers in your life and you know how to go about buying a good laptop or personal desktop computer. now that touch screens are being introduced into notebook computers, many people find themselves wondering how to choose a good one. there are a few factors that are key to choosing a good system.

First and foremost when choosing a laptop computer with a touch screen is the sensitivity of the screen. It would be pointless to buy a system that didn’t respond well to touch input. Not all systems are created equally and it would be wise to try out the laptop before purchasing it. This can be a little difficult because not all computer stores carry touchscreen laptops and knows that two are not likely to carry a wide selection. It’s no big deal to order a computer on the if Internet since you can basically read the specifications and know if you will be likely to like it are not. when it comes to purchasing a laptop with a touch screen, you really need to play with it to decide whether or not you’re going to like it.

There are two types of touch screens that you’ll have to choose from. The first is called passive digitizing and the second is called active digitizing. The differences between the two can get quite complex and technical but for your purposes, all you need to realize is that with a passive digitizing screen can use your finger or a stylus to write on the screen and make selections. with an active digitizing screen, you need to use an electronic digital stylus that has its own power source. old active digital stylus pens had a power cord that tethered them to the computer but new ones are usually equipped with a small battery. Some digital stylus pens can be turned over in the back of the pan will function like an eraser on a pencil. This can be a very handy feature when taking notes.

Active digitizers generally recognize handwriting more accurately but you must always use the digital pen. Passive digitizers offer the flexibility of using your finger if you would like but handwriting recognition isn’t quite as accurate and if you dump the screen with the palm of your hand, your palm will interfere with the input. The computer will basically think that you meant to make an input selection with your hand when all you actually did was bumped the screen.

Some passive digitizers come with what is palm rejection. This is a feature that is basically intended to make the computer ignore accidental bumping of the screen from your palm.

When purchasing a touchscreen laptop computer, all of the other factors that normally come into play remain the same. you want to buy system with a good fast processor, plenty of memory, a large hard drive, plenty of USB ports, a card reader, a DVD rider, WIFI capability, etc.

What ever you do, don’t fall in love with a computer just because it has a touchscreen. make sure that the touchscreen computer that you’ve decided buy functions well and powerful enough for all of your computing needs.

The Difference Between Desktop, Laptop and Notebook Computers

July 5, 2012 by

So what is the difference between a desktop, a laptop and a notebook computer? what are the good and bad qualities of each? Which one should I buy?

These are all questions you may be asking yourself. I have created this post in order to answer your pertinent questions about desktop, laptop and notebook computers.

Desktop computers are much bigger and heavier than laptops and notebooks. They usually store more information and have more features than the other computer types. This being said, they are usually left at home and are not for quick transport. Also, desktop computers usually have all of their parts in different pieces. the main brain of the computer is linked to the screen, power source (it has no battery) and keyboard/mouse through wires. While desktops are bigger and not portable, many find them to be faster and easier to work with.

Laptop computers are designed for on the go travel. While they can be used as home computers, laptops are fitted with batteries and can be transported easily from one place to another. Laptops and notebooks are usually confused as the same thing. While they both are designed for travel, the laptop usually has graphics cards, CD writer drives, and larger (usually heavier) screens. A big question to consider when buying a computer is whether you should have a laptop or a notebook.

Notebook computers are often confused as laptop computers. Notebooks are light, extremely portable, and have along battery life. While popular with students and business men, notebooks have great qualities that anyone can enjoy. Notebooks are usually not fitted with graphics cards and usually have a smaller, more compact keyboard. They are ideal for homework, assignments, papers and forms. the main purpose of a notebook is functionality. It is not so much an entertainment medium as it is a project manager.

What are the good and bad qualities of each?

Desktop computers – good qualities:

* designed for heavy use and large capacity

* ideal for home office/family computer

* easier to use for most people

Desktop computers – bad qualities:

* not portable

* can take up a lot of space

Laptop computers – good qualities:

* portable and easy to set up

* compact yet capable of media play (videos, games)

* can substitute as a home computer

Laptop computers – bad qualities:

* can still be heavy if needed for constant portability

* battery life is not always very long (depending on what it’s doing)

* can get bogged down

Notebook computers – good qualities:

* very light and easy to move around

* ideal for documentation and small presentations

* great for classroom or workplace environments

Notebook computers – bad qualities:

* not for graphic needs (video, games)

* not great for multitasking

Which one should I buy?

This choice depends on what you will be using the computer for. if you plan to keep it at home all the time and need a easy-to-use and efficient device, a desktop is the best choice. if you need to take it to meetings but also need to be able to create intricate graphical presentations on it, a laptop is the perfect decision. if your a student and need to take notes and homework assignments down, a powerful little notebook is right up your alley.

It’s all about your needs in a computer, finding out what you need your computer to do will help you decide on which type of computer is right for you

Choosing The Best Laptop Computers

Filed under Every thing you Need to Know

Computers are becoming more and more affordable for people to purchase for their own personal use. this is due primarily to constant advances in technology that make them easier and cheaper to manufacture, and designs that make them more powerful. Laptops are even as powerful as most desktops now, plus they have the advantage of being more portable. But choosing the best laptop computers can be difficult if you don’t know what to look for.

There are many similarities between desktops and laptops that can help you choose a good one. For instance, the amount of hard drive space is something that can easily be compared between any two computers, regardless of the style. the same goes for the amount of RAM, the keyboard design, and the size of the screen.

But there are features on laptops that aren’t as obvious that matter quite a bit in terms of whether it’s a good one or not. the type of processor is a huge one. the processor may be multi-core or single core, the amount of cache memory available on it matters, as does the speed of the processor itself. these things are not always easy to find, but they are definitely worth finding out and comparing between the models you are looking at since the processor is one of the only things you can’t easily upgrade later.

Another thing to check out is the battery life of the laptop. the size of the battery itself has a lot to do with how long it will last, so find out what type of battery comes with it. in addition to the size of the battery, the processor and the size of the screen also has a lot to do with how long the battery lasts. More powerful processors and bigger screens typically mean lower battery life.

The hard drive in the laptop has features other than how large it is as well. Hard drives have different speeds and connection types as well which determines how quickly your computer will run. look for ones the faster ones because slow ones will limit how quickly your computer can operate, no matter how fast your processor is.

Then there’s the overall size of the computer. Laptops are designed to be portable, so they are naturally smaller than desktops. if you want a built-in keypad, you’ll have to get one with a 17 inch or larger screen. and if you want a simple one that you can bring anywhere easily, you may want to look into a netbook (which is simply a small, simple laptop).

Finally, there are all of the other little features that some laptops have and others don’t. these include webcams, fingerprint readers, built-in media buttons, touchpads, speakers, number of USB ports, media card readers, etc. these all add to the value of the laptop. and if you want to play games, you will want a good graphics card as well.

Elizabethton Library receives grant for laptop computer lab – Elizabethton Star

The Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library was officially presented with a federal United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development Grant Wednesday morning.

The grant was for a total of $6,728 and was used to purchase 11 laptop computers, one assistive laptop a projector, router and a mobile cabinet. the library also received $12,494 from the state to supplement the grant. the laptops and equipment are being used for basic computer skills classes that are hosted at the library each Tuesday night.

USDA representatives visited East Tennessee to officially announce the grants, which were given to five East Tennessee libraries and a child advocacy project based in Monroe County. there were over $200,000 in grants distributed in East Tennessee. a total of 78 libraries in 60 counties in Tennessee received a USDA Rural Development grant to improve their computers.

The grants to the libraries were made possible through a partnership between the USDA and the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development. the goal of the grants was to improve the electronic networks that allow residents to access the Internet.

“The disproportionate economic hardship many rural Tennesseans have endured as a result of the recession is no secret,” said USDA Rural Development State Director Bobby Goode. “Unfortunately, these same people are less likely to have access to the training and other resources available with high speed Internet at home. Public libraries are a natural place to bridge this gap. More adult workers turn to them every day; to search and apply for jobs online, access training to expand their skills, apply for assistance and seek answers to health, legal and other issues aggravated by unemployment.”

Goode said the grant project was an “unbelievable success” in getting new technology and equipment into rural libraries which are often the last libraries to receive funding from the state. he noted one of the good things about the grant is that it is fully funded and requires no match from the local government. the grant does require that 60 hours of computer education classes be held for the community.

The ECCPL has been hosting basic beginner computer classes on Tuesday night for the past five weeks. Library Director Mel Goff said the classes covered the very basics of computers; like what the parts of the computer were for, the different software and hardware and beginner computer tasks and functions. she noted that most of the people in the class were senior citizens. she said those taking the class have requested a class on Facebook so they will know how to use the social networking site to stay in touch with family and friends.

Other East Tennessee libraries to receive grants were the Johnson County Public Library, which received $10,572 along with $8,650 from the state for 11 computers, projector, router, assistive laptop and mobile cabinet. the Stokely Memorial and Parrotsville Library in Cocke County received a USDA Rural Development grant for $14,974 and $12,252 from the state for a complete computer lab with equipment, furniture and wiring. the Kingston Public Library in Roan County received a $2,883 USDA grant and $16,339 from the state to install a computer lab, furniture and wiring. the Rockwood Public Library in Roane County received a USDA grant for $2,882 and $16,338 from the state to install a computer lab, furniture and wiring. In Monroe County, a $66,000 low interest loan and a $34,600 grant will be used to purchase a 1,653-square-foot building to house CADA Monroe inc., a court appointed advocate for abused or neglected children. the facility will improve the advocate’s ability to take in children and provide them a safe environment to speak with staff.
