Are you annoyed with the somewhat short lifespan of your laptop’s battery? here are some tips that you can consider in preserving the battery life of your gadget:

Power Saver – There is an option in the lower right side of the Taskbar, the power options. in there, you have the choice to select “Power Saver” option so that your laptop will preserve its battery life while slowing its performance minutely. this is highly advisable if you need your laptop for quite a long time and not doing something costly to your laptop’s resources.

Reduce Brightness – When using your laptop, reduce the brightness. The brightness of the laptop is not only costly in power but also is stressful to the eyes of the user. Reduce your brightness but not to the extent that it is too dark because that will force your eyes. Be sure to maintain brightness at a reasonable level.

Cool Your Laptop – if you have a cooling pad, use it. it is quite helpful in preserving battery life of your notebook. if you don’t have one, it’s either you purchase one or just raise the level of your laptop’s rear side a little to cool off the air vents. Another option would be using an electric fan (if you are at home) to help cool the laptop.

Don’t Overcharge – Overcharging is something that a lot of people are guilty of. it is advisable that you do not charge your laptop more than 8 hours per time. moreover, when the battery indicator on your taskbar indicates that the laptop’s battery is full, remove the charger. That way, you save up on energy consumption as well as on your battery’s life.

These are just a few of the many ways you can preserve your laptop’s battery. Hopefully, it will no longer be a hassle to preserve your notebook’s battery.

From the Archives: First Mention of Computer Programs?

Today in 1836, Charles Babbage wrote in his notebook: “This day I had for the first time a general but very indistinct conception of the possibility of making an engine work out algebraic developments. I mean without any reference to the value of the letters. My notion is that cards (Jacquards) of the Calc. engine direct a series of operations and then recommence with the first so it might perhaps be possible to cause the same cards to punch others equivalent to any given number of repetitions. but their hole [their holes?] might perhaps be small pieces of formulae previously made by the first cards.”

This passage, says Brian Randell in The Origins of Digital Computers, “puts beyond doubt the fact that Babbage had thought of using the Analytical Engine to what would today be described as ‘computing its own programs.’”

In The Information: A History, A Theory, A Flood,  James Gleick quotes Edgar Allan  Poe on Babbage’s machine: “What shall we think of an engine of wood and metal which can… render the exactitude of its operations mathematically certain through its power of correcting its possible errors?” and Oliver Wendell Holmes: “What a satire is that machine on the mere mathematician! A Frankenstein-monster, a thing without brains and without heart, too stupid to make a blunder; which turns out results like a corn-sheller, and never grows any wiser or better, though it grind a thousand bushels of them!”

Says Gleick: “They all spoke as though the engine were real, but it never was. It remained poised before its own future.”

Are There Any Cheap Gaming Laptops?

June 13, 2012 by
Filed under Every thing you Need to Know

If you regularly visit the different gaming forums you will often hear gamers discussing the whole question of whether or not there are any such creatures as cheap gaming laptops? Without fail, there is always someone who pipes in with the declaration that this argument is rather silly since there is no such thing as a gaming laptop; if you want true computer gaming, you must purchase a desktop computer. regardless, laptop prices have steadily dropped over the last few years and since laptop improvements and specs have greatly increased, this is now more of a legitimate question.

So can You have a Cheap Gaming Laptop?

To fully answer that question you have to consider two major factors. first, what is your definition of a cheap gaming notebook – a laptop under $2000, $1000 or even under $700? Second, what is your definition of a gaming laptop – what specs/features should it have? What games should it be able to play and at what resolutions?

Unless you have been following the whole subject of gaming and laptops, you may be surprised at just how far laptop performance has increased and how low laptop prices have dropped. Perhaps, a detailed discussion of those two issues will prove helpful in answering our question about the possibility of having cheap gaming notebooks.

Now, you have to remember, one of the most important things which makes a gaming laptop possible will be the quality and performance of your GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) which is commonly referred to as the graphics card. regardless of the price of the laptop, this is the first thing you should check and research. Is the graphics card ranked as high-end, mid-range or low-end? how much dedicated video memory does the card have? Check to see what video games it can play smoothly and at what resolution? most gamers wouldn’t settle for anything less than a mid to high-end discrete Nvidia or ATI graphics card in their gaming notebook computer.

Probably, the next consideration when choosing a gaming laptop will be the GPU (General Processing Unit) which largely determines how fast your computer will run. While the type and amount of RAM is also important, it is the processor(s) you should check out closely and see how they are ranked and reviewed? Recently we have seen the introduction of the new second generation Intel Quad-Core i5 and i7 Processors, which have been nick-named Sandy Bridge. These new processors give 10-50% better performances and can even be factory over-clocked for even greater performance.

It is these high-performance Quad-Core processors which is making the old desktop vs laptop for gaming rather a moot point. most of the latest gaming notebooks have the power and high specs to run and play most modern video games without a hitch. While most of these gaming notebooks are still large and heavy, they are a much portable system than a desktop computer. plus, the new switchable graphics technology have given these gaming laptops a little more battery life, but short battery life is still an issue for many gamers.

How Cheap can a Gaming Laptop go?

Competition in the gaming notebook market has become very fierce. We have major laptop manufacturers such as Alienware (Dell), Sager, Falcon, Asus, HP, Toshiba, MSI. all competing for the gamer’s attention and wallet. Prices have steadily fallen, but for a fully loaded gaming rig with all the bells and whistles, laptop buyers will still have to pay 3 or 4 grand for the top models.

However, depending on the size and specs, you can still get a very good gaming laptop for under $1000. If you want something small and portable, the Alienware M11x is a safe bet. It offers great performance in a very small package, one of the only drawbacks has been the lack of an optical drive. You should also look at the Asus gaming laptops such as the ASUS G53JW-A1 and ASUS G53SW-XA1 which are under or around $1200.

In the $1500 to $2000 range you should give the Alienware M14x, MSI GX630 and Toshiba Qosmio x505 series a close look. also, perhaps one of THE gaming laptops of the moment is the Alienware M18x which even has a base price under $2000, but gamers know you will have to pay more if you want one with the highest specs. Another worthy consideration is the ASUS G73SW-XA1 Republic of Gamers 17.3-Inch laptop for around $1800.

One of the cheapest gaming notebooks you might consider is the ASUS N53SV-XE1 which is a little under $900 and will give you the new Intel Core i7-2630QM Quad-Core Processor 2.0 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz; coupled with a 500GB Hard Drive at 7200 RPM. plus you get 4GB of DDR3 1333 MHz SDRAM and the Nvidia GT540M Graphics with 1GB DDR3 VRAM. If you want to go even lower, you may even consider the MSI X370-001US 13.4-Inch with a price tag of around $600, which will be good for causal gaming, but always remember these lower priced rigs will come with limitations.

Notebooks are the Past, Tablets are the Future

April 29, 2012 by
Filed under Every thing you Need to Know

This may be one of the more controversial columns I have written in sometime, although my goal is not to be controversial but to spur thought- so please hear me out. it is no secret that I am very bullish on the tablet form factor.

I have written extensively about them since the launch of the first iPad about my beliefs in this product’s role in the future of computing. But there are still many in the industry who have long watched, predicted, and benefited from the evolution of the desktop computer to the notebook and its success world wide that disagree with the more bullish thinking about tablets replacing laptops eventually.

At analyst meetings I attend and during many conversations with industry folk, I constantly hear a theme of tablets turning into notebooks. in essence there is a belief that the tablet form factor will evolve in form and function to look more like a notebook rather than less. this device is in essence the convergence of a notebook with a tablet. there is a good chance that with Windows 8 this form factor will appeal to a segment of the market. Even if that happens, and because of Windows 8, I believe that it is inevitable that all major software going forward will be re-imagined for touch interfaces first and foremost.

Notebooks of old will become Relics

Because of the incredible growth of the iPad and smartphones over recent years, nearly all software developers have turned their eyes to touch. I have been one of the foremost proponents of touch computing and I firmly believe it is the foundation of our computing future. with that reality in mind, it seems clear to me clear that the software industry has been reborn around touch computing–R.I.P Computer-Aided display Control (aka Mouse).

It is because of this new computing paradigm built from the ground up around touch that when I see notebooks I feel like I am looking at the past. yet when I see how kids, elderly, non-techies, first time computer users in emerging markets, and more, all use the iPad, I am convinced I am looking at the future.

If you read my column on the new era of personal computing, I made the statement that notebooks are not actually mobile computers but are really portable desktops with compromises made on behalf of portability. in fact it was fascinating to hear Apple’s COO Peter Oppenheimer refer to the Mac business as desktops and portables–that’s my kind of industry terminology! Many desktop use cases are the same on notebooks. The only difference between the two is that one is portable and one is not. The iPad is however much more of a personal mobile computer than a notebook ever was or will be and the drastic change in use cases between the iPad and notebooks is significant.

I don’t know anyone who owns an iPad who has stopped using their notebook or desktop entirely. Sometimes there are times when you want a larger screen and a keyboard to accomplish some tasks. this is the best argument for the hybrid tablet / notebook computer. However, acknowledging that for some tasks a larger screen and keyboard are convenient, there is another scenario I can see playing out that may make the notebook form factor irrelevant for many consumers.

The Desktops new Role

Believe it or not, I see desktops making a comeback due to a role change. there is an interesting trend emerging around desktops. Consumer all-in-one Desktops (Like the iMac) are being designed to be showcased prominently in the house rather than stuck in the den or office. These computers will be very elegant, very powerful, and very affordable. so rather than try to converge a notebook and a tablet, I think a better solution is to pair a desktop all-in-one with a tablet. this would especially be interesting in consumer markets.

In this solution, when you want a big screen, keyboard, etc., you get it in a no compromise package with more processing power, graphics, memory, and storage than you would ever get in a converged tablet / notebook or a laptop. Then when you want a mobile computer you get a no compromise mobile computer with a tablet. I think this makes a lot of sense, perhaps even more than a converged notebook / tablet for the mass market.

Without fully testing one of these converged notebook / tablet devices it is hard to say this with absolute confidence but my fear with this converged form factor is that it will be a compromised notebook and a compromised tablet. Even though it is trying to be the best of both worlds, my fear is that it fails at both, or at the very least is heavily compromised on both fronts. Plus, if you buy my logic that a notebook is just a portable desktop, then the notebook becomes irrelevant in a desktop / tablet solution.

Of course the cloud and specifically the relationship between a desktop and a tablet would need to evolve quite a bit more than it is today for this to work. that is why I refer to it as a solution because it would need to have solution based thinking for this particular scenario to be done right.

This even works in a family setting where each person of the house has their own tablet screen and the desktop remains the communal screen for more “heavy lifting.” Each person’s cloud would have to work harmoniously on a personal level and also at a family level.

I have in fact been trying this experiment for myself at my house. using a desktop as my primary big screen computer and a tablet for all my other mobile use cases. it is surprisingly sufficient already even without being built with this specific use case in mind.

Now realistically the notebook form factor will always exist for a certain segment. this model may not work for business users or mobile professionals. But I am beginning to wonder whether this desktop paired with a tablet solution may be a very attractive proposition for the mass consumer market. in this scenario everyone in the home has their own personal tablet rather than everyone having their own personal notebook. this scenario is not tomorrow, next year, or even a few years away but I would not be shocked if this solution gains traction at some point in time in the future.

This topic again is meant more of a thought exercise around a scenario that I could see playing out. Rarely am I struck with such a feeling that when I look at the excitement from many vendors around notebooks that I am sensing they are investing in the past, not in the future. But that is exactly the feeling I am having of late.

Laptop Computer Cases – Which One is Right For You?

March 22, 2012 by
Filed under Every thing you Need to Know

There are many types of laptop computer cases all in different shapes and sizes. my favorite would be the briefcase model. The reason being that it is a lightweight and strong case and I found a moulded resin case that weighed less than two pounds and when I put in my laptop, charger and some other accessories it weighed less than ten pounds. if you travel to work by any other means than car or bus (train, walking) then you should know that the maximum amount of weight your wrist would be able to take is ten pounds and if you go over that limit with journeys that go over the half an hour mark your wrists will become soar. my briefcase doesn’t just hold my laptop, but it can be a support for my notebook and at times serve as a plate for my breakfast. However, for those that are just looking for cases that can be used at home then you will probably have different requirements.

Laptop cases aren’t just made in multiple shapes and sizes just to look pretty, they are designed like this for people’s different needs. for example, cases with wheels may be great for those who travel a lot. These are great as they make sure that you aren’t carrying the whole weight of the laptop and if you have a briefcase style there is no doubt that your shoulders (or even your fingers if you decide to hold it that way) will soon start to hurt. A case with wheels will by no doubt make things a lot easier for you as you won’t have to deal with that extra weight alone.

Your laptop weight can also affect the case you should look into. Some people have the luxury of buying the slimmer and lighter laptops, but there are some people who have the multimedia notebooks that can weigh more than 10 pounds with the accessories and then the weight of the bag added onto that could cause a big total in weight. Weight should be at the top of your list of things to consider. no one should try struggling with fifteen pounds, your shoulders and neck will start to get stiff and it will most likely become painful. no matter how nice the case looks leave it alone if it is too heavy.

With this information you should be able to find a nice laptop computer case that will be light on your shoulder and fit your needs.

Cheap Laptop, Good Value?

Cheap laptops are such a gamble. some people swear to buy cheap laptops perhaps because they were extremely fortunate the first time they purchased one. They did not really notice just how bad some of the other low cost notebooks were.

Some people refuse to spend enough money on a computer. They are almost always in the middle of some type of crisis involving one of their cheap laptops. some people are pretty sure that they have spent enough on cheap laptops.

Sometimes we are just a little suspicious with the disparity in costs between a used notebook and a new one. We really do not like overpaying the technology. We don’t think anybody does.

We think that there really are a lot of hidden costs for low cost notebook. They cost you worry and time and sometimes the cost of another computer. unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there selling broken laptops disguised as cheap notebooks. This secondary market will continue to flourish as more and more laptops are produced and purchased.

Low cost laptops are not for everyone. Sometimes when we purchase a laptop at a very very cheap price, we are extremely thrilled with that type of purchase as we cannot think of paying more money for the same and we would rather stay with cheap laptops because if something in our computer screwed up and we had paid that much for it, we might have a heart problem.

As with all technology and consumer items, low cost notebooks have a very specific market people that buy cheap laptops will certainly never be completely convinced to pay full price for any cutting edge or top of the line item. the only chance they are changing sides is by winning lottery.

In any case, now a days as productions costs come down and the market is submerged with all makes of laptops, notebooks prices have been steadily dropping, broken down below those stampede prices in some cases, we can surely expect laptop prices to drop even further.

Most products come down in price eventually, but actually electronic products seem to come down in prices more rapidly. More [laptop-support.net/index.php/All-About-Laptops/].

Laptop or Personal Computer?

March 5, 2012 by
Filed under Every thing you Need to Know

What is a laptop and a personal computer? a laptop is also known as the notebook, because a person can bring this device anywhere and they can use it as long as they want. While the personal computer is a device that needs a Central processing unit which is the heart and the brain of the whole set, a monitor where the user can view the commands that they want. these are two devices that has the same capability but got different features at the same time. You can try to figure out which is better between this two devices after our comparison listed below, you will observe the strengths and weakness of each device.
Are you choosing whether to buy a new set of computer the desktop one and a laptop? You must first consider your budget, your convenience, and a lot more. Computer desktop set is usually used in some institutions and offices, while laptop is more on likely to be a personal device.

Below are the stuffs that you must consider whether to buy a desktop set or a laptop:

Comfort of using
When being comfortable laptop will be the answer to this matter. It is because you can bring your laptop anywhere. a laptop is usually used by students because it is very handy and they can use it inside their campus especially if their school is wi-fi ready area.

Price
Laptops are cheaper compared to personal computers. It is because in every part of your personal computer has its own costs while in laptop all the devices are enclosed to a small device which makes the laptop more comfortable to use. Take note consider your budget before availing one of this two great machines.

Net connection
Internet connection for laptops is very easy to access it is because there are lost o area that are already wi-fi zones which can give your laptops an internet connection. While in personal computers you need to look for a provider of he internet connection you want to have, and you will pay for the monthly bill. plus if you have a desktop set it will surely require you to avail or buy more line connections so that you can have a better internet service.

Power
When it comes to power electricity personal computers are the best, it is because all you need to do is to plug the outlet of your personal computer to the socket where electricity flows and have a great time surfing the net, while in laptops it is rechargeable you need to charge it in order for you to use it out door. BUT laptop are still a better choice because laptop got a battery so if you are working you can still have enough time to save your work.

Devices
When it comes to devices or gadgets that you need a laptop have it all. It is because you do not need to buy or avail a speaker, microphone, webcam and a mouse when you have a laptop. a laptop got its built in microphone, webcam, speaker and a touchpad that serves as its mouse. Just make sure that you’ve got a fan under your laptop to avoid heating of your whole system that might burn the sensitive circuits inside your laptop.

Durability
When it comes to the matter of durability a computer set will be the best choice, since it is placed on a table or desk which is very safe from falling, while in laptop there are accidents that happens like you drop your laptop from your lap that can cause a huge damage or malfunction.

Memory
When it comes to memory capacity no doubt a computer desktop set will surely win. It is because the latest central processing unit are mostly dual core that are very suitable for gaming stations and it contains a higher memory capacity compared to laptops.

So these are the matters that you must consider before buying a laptop or a computer set. You can also have canvass in some computer selling shop for latest models. You can also have some research, facts and proofs of which of the two is better. try to ask some computer owners and laptops on what are their usual or common difficulties or the problems they are facing in regard of these two devices.

NOTE: you can always avail the device that you want just make sure that it will surely make sense to you in a way that you will use it on your everyday routine, a gadget or machine that will help you make things easier. Being comfortable and budget two factors that you just keeping mind when you are choosing between two machines that are expensive and very helpful at the same time.

Tips in Selecting a PC

January 31, 2012 by
Filed under Every thing you Need to Know

The year 2012 will certainly bring new technologies, new gadgets and new developments in the world of information technology.

In the area of computers, users could be divided into the three main types – desktop, notebook and tablet. People who are contemplating on moving from being a desktop user to being a tablet carrier would benefit from a differentiation of the three types of PCs as the technology world continues to change and evolve.

Desktop Computers

It is the first among the personal computer devices ever used for a variety of purpose but is often placed in a regular spot at home or in offices.

The basic set comes with a central processing unit which is the brain of the desktop PC, then the monitor could be of any size but now usually flatscreen types. The complete set-up includes keyboards and mouse for control and an auto voltage regulator for power regulation. Each part of the desktop PC set may vary in size, design and add on technology.

Other devices which can power up the PC include the printer, scanner, headphones, speakers, joystick, stylus and cooler.

Specialty

Like us on Facebook

Desktop PCs have one specialty, to maximize everything. this type of PC is the only one that can be upgraded many times superseding other units and making itself a supercomputer with only the risk of electric failure and shock, but definitely fast! A video uploaded in the Internet featured several processors installed in one PC unit capable of opening 20 programs in seconds.

Additionally, repairs and upgrade parts are easier to find and much cheaper than the notebook or a tablet. Owning a PC unit is relatively of low cost. A regular PC costs from $399 for the basic model and up to $10,000 for high-powered ones designed for gaming.

Drawback

The main drawback of the PC is its size because it takes a lot of space. Desktop PCs could create its own laboratory in the fullest set because of all its add-ons needed for various purposes. Because of its immense size the PC requires power as long as it is being used, hence there are no PCs run by batteries

The Notebook PCs

The notebook or laptop PCs is the mobile version of the desktop. it is integrated with a monitor, keyboard, pointing device and speaker. it has an AC adapter for direct power source and battery which allows its use away from the outlet for quite some time.

Notebook PCs virtually has the same ports that the desktop have, access hard drives, accessories and other PC devices that desk tops normally have. it can also obtain certain hardware originally from the desktop by purchasing the external version available for notebooks.

Today, notebooks are stylish, optimised and up-to-date, which makes it capable of replicating a lot of high-end functions of the desktop from internet connection to gaming.

Specialty

Portability is the number one advantage of the notebook. The owner can bring it anywhere by carry it by hand or on the shoulder.

Productivity is the next advantage because whenever the owners needs to access emails or documents, he can use it even while stuck inside the train or a car.

Immediacy means at the moment of need and the desktop is far and one has an unexpected need for a PC, the notebook is there.

Connectivity properties of notebooks allow it to be accessed through Wi-Fi and HSDPA networks which are common these days in public establishments. Notebooks have.

low power consumption compared to the desktop since it consumes 20-90 watts while desktops consume 100-800 watts.

The notebook is also quieter than the desktop due to smaller hardware and smaller cooling fans. its components are all in one set, including the display, keyboard, mouse, and speaker. it is virtually immune to power outages.

Drawback

The main weakness of the notebooks is its performance. No matter how expensive it is, there is no chance it can really match the full capability of a fully upgraded desktop PC.

Next is unavailability of parts, making notebooks difficult to upgrade . some of its parts are not in the same size, which is something the desktop PCs have in standards.

Health issues are also more noticeable in notebooks than desktops. Continued use of the device for several hours can cause wrist and arms pain.

Durability is also can issue because its major hardware can be exposed to heat, cold, dust, and other natural elements. The cooling fan may also get clogged from the accumulated dust inside the device.

Last but not the least is battery issue. Notebooks can last up to 5 hours maximum while a few powerful ones can last up to 10 hours, still depending on use and environment. Notebook batteries are easy to depreciate unlike that of mobile phones. As the battery ages, it function slowly goes down and independence from the outlet last from hours to just minutes.

Tablet Computers

The newbie in the personal computer arena is the tablet. it is larger than a mobile phone or digital assistant, integrated into a flat touchscreen and primarily operated by touching the screen than using a physical keyboard. it often uses onscreen virtual keys, passive stylus pen or digital pen.

The standard form is called a slate which does not have an integrated keyboard but may be connected to one with a wireless link or via USB port. Convertibles are integrated with the keyboard that can be hidden by a swivel joint or slide joint exposing only the screen for touch operation. Hybrids have a detachable keyboard so that the touchscreen can be used as stand alone keys. Booklets include two touch screens, and can be used as a notebook by displaying a virtual key in one of them.

Specialty

If portability is something the notebook has, the tablet has improved this by adding comfort. Tablets are very conducive to use in several environments such as lying in bed, standing or handling by one hand.

Another plus for the tablet is its lighter weight compared to notebooks without losing the need for performance and style. The touch feature makes it capable of controlling and manipulating everything such zoom and panning of images, video and music dragging during views.

Tablets can be used for easier entry of diagrams, mathematical notations and symbols. With the proper software, keyboards can also be localised for independent inputs depending on the owner's choice. Tablets allow the download of more applications from their respective markets or stores which makes this device more capacitive.

Last advantage of the tablet is the battery life. it is similar in strength to high-end smartphones. Tablets can last for up to 9 hours with all features under use or two days with just daily activities. making it more powered up than notebooks.

Drawbacks

Significantly, tablets are very expensive similar to above-average notebooks. for beginners, using a tablet can be difficult at first since this kind of device is powered by OS similar to smartphones which requires being knowledgeable of its features.

Another drawback is with its hardware since tablets have very limited storage capacity with the maximum built-in storage memory less than 100GB. although it is way too little compared to notebooks or desktops, however, the application versions for tablets are smaller in size too.

Input speed may not be as fast as what the user can do with the real keys, which may make it necessary to buy an add-on keyboard for the tablet. for business users , only a few tablets can perform impressively in terms of presentations, scheduling and data management.
